16 century

The name Nurmuiza derives from the Livonian word “nurm,” meaning “field,” and the name Nurme was first mentioned in historical records in the year 1380. Over the centuries, the castle complex has seen its share of battles, intrigue, and change, including the land reform of 1920 that led to the family losing ownership of the estate.
